Saint Airy de Verdun in carved oak with metal elements. Of s - Lot 320
Saint Airy de Verdun in carved oak with metal elements. Of slender stature, the holy bishop is wearing a miter and a cape, with a barrel at his feet. Eastern France, first half of 18th century Height: 38 cm (minor damage to fingers) Rare representation of this Eastern French saint, also known as Saint Ageric because he is said to have been born in a wheat field where his mother worked, not far from Verdun. He became the city's 9th bishop at the age of 34 and died in 588, having spent his life teaching and helping the poor. His attribute is the barrel, alluding to one of his miracles when he blessed a barrel whose wine began to flow freely to quench the thirst of the Frankish warriors accompanying Childebert II during the Austrasian king's visit to his bishopric.
