West Africa. Mendes. The Zandé and Mangbetu are warlike peop - Lot 27
West Africa. Mendes. The Zandé and Mangbetu are warlike peoples of Sudanese origin who dominate their ethnically different neighbours.these two typical Mangbetu statuettes show body paintings executed with a gardenia decoction. These geometric paintings are influenced by the pygmies and change according to the circumstances. These sculptures have their origins on the banks of the Uele and are called Beli. Although the purpose of these sculptures is unclear, it is certain that works carved by the Mangbetu were executed at the instigation of the first settlers. H. 49,5cm. (Africa, African art, Civilization and ethnic groups).
