Guillaume APOLLINAIRE. autograph manuscript, La chanson du mal aimé, [circa 1904?]; in-8 notebook (21.5 x 14 cm) consisting of 9 in-4 folded sheets on the letterhead of the Banque centrale de Crédit mobilier & industriel. First version of this important poem from Alcools, very different from the final poem. La Chanson du mal aimé, inspired by Apollinaire's despair after being spurned by Annie Playden in London in May 1904, was published in Mercure de France on May 1, 909, before being collected in Alcools in 1913. The notebook is made up of folded sheets from the Banque centrale de Crédit mobilier et Industriel, written in black ink on the front; all the stanzas are five lines long; several were not retained in the final version. The first page bears the final title, and a crossed-out epigraph: "Le violon à l'âme en peine et quatre cordes de pendus" ("The violin with the soul in pain and four strings of hanged men"). It features three stanzas; the first announces the 12th stanza of the poem ("Adieu, faux amour confondu"): "L'amour un jour je l'ai perdu Dans une forêt d'Allemagne Il git là le cou tordu Derrière les Sept Montagnes Et je voudrais être pendu." The following two stanzas have been omitted and framed with a stroke of the pen: "Avec mon ombre dans la ville / Des métiers j'en faites par mille" and "Les habits du ciel ont des trous [ ] Dansons, dansons le caiquevoque / Bras en pattes de kangourous" Page 2 comprises 4 stanzas; the first two will be found, much modified, in the 2nd "Voie lactée" sequence (stanzas 2 and 3). "I know people of all kinds / They do not equal their fates" "The demons of chance, according to / Loving laws lead us" "I believe these demons are just / The fates are equivalent, [ ] Negroes are worth white people, / Augustus is great like Augustus." The last stanza inaugurates a gallery of sovereigns and statesmen, a sequence omitted from the final version, which will unfold in 14 stanzas over the next four pages: "Ah! j'en ai vu des souverains, Un peu partout, dans mon Europe. Albert premier, prince marin" Then come, in succession: "Nicholas two, the Russian emperor" (stanza crossed out), "William two, the emperor king" (2 stanzas), "Luitpold, the old prince regent" (3 stanzas, which will be integrated into the poem's final sequence), "Leopold, the king of Belgium", "Oscar of Sweden and Norwège", "la bourgeoise clique / Grévy, Carnot, Faure, Loubet" (4 stanzas), Emile Loubet and "Edouard sept, le roi d'Angleterre", Harden Hickey, "le pape, / La fleur de lys du Vatican", "le vieux grand-duc badois, / Le prince blond roi de l'Hellade / Et le Tsarewitch aux longs doigts", and "l'Eugénie-Andromaque".
