Guillaume APOLLINAIRE. autograph manuscript, La fausse bien - Lot 3
Guillaume APOLLINAIRE. autograph manuscript, La fausse bien aimée, [circa 1904?]; 2 leaves in-4 (21 x 16.5 cm, edges frayed). Draft of 7 stanzas, including the first 4, from La Chanson du mal aimé. This is probably a very early draft of the poem. It is written in black ink on lined paper. The first three stanzas have already found their shape, and appear to have been cleaned up, with a few erasures. The fourth stanza is heavily crossed out and corrected: "Au tournant d'une rue [tremblant] brûlant" ("At the turn of a street [trembling] burning"). The next line is difficult to perfect: "De feux mourants par myriades / en enfilade" ("Of dying fires by myriads / in enfilade"), then: "De tous les feux de ses façades" ("Of all the fires of its facades"). The same goes for the 4th line: "Et cicatrices des façades", then: "Quand dialoguent les façades", and finally: "Où se lamentaient les façades". Verso, pen-and-ink drawings: nude woman, flowers, pipe, dice, man showing off to his dog. The second sheet, on the same paper, presents the last three stanzas of the sequence Les Sept Epées: "La cinquième, Sainte Fabeau," "La sixième, métal de gloire" "Et la septième s'exténue" On verso, pen drawings: forest landscape, one-legged woman, kerosene lamp with shade, grinning head, deformed woman in overalls, dancing imp. Album Apollinaire (Pléiade 1971), p. 134 (reproduction of 1st page).
