Monsieur R. is a key figure in the art scene from the 80s to the present day. A collector since the age of 11, and a gallery owner since his twenties, he shares with us the works from his collection that have marked his personal career. In the case of deceased artists, some were precursors of his conception of modernity, while he had an almost carnal relationship with others. For the living, there were spurned but passionate collaborations, and often, for the star-studded, first Parisian shows, or chance encounters on very specific works. An eclectic yet coherent selection, driven by the same concern for radicalism and humanity. Protean, Monsieur R's collection is driven by artists who are singular, primitive, verist, poetic, brutal, offbeat, but all unaligned, committed and embodied. They are often part of our society's cursed frontiers, which they explore at their leisure via the new media and mediums available to them. Spontaneous and libertarian, this movement was a major artistic trend at the end of the 20th century, and should be given its rightful place and contribution. It is part and parcel of the open culture of the 21st century, where art moves freely from the street to the studio, from social networks to the intimacy of a screen, from digital to more traditional media, without going astray, in all humanity, far from pompous, labelled art. COLLECTION F. ALTMANN & NIVESE: L'ÂME DE L'ECOLE DE NICE Lots 60 to 125

In the French contemporary art scene, there are very few couples like Frédéric Altmann and Nives Oscari. He is a photographer, archivist, critic, historian and former director of the Centre International d'Art Contemporain de Carros. She is an artist, visual artist, draughtsman and sculptor. I'm not sure who to talk to when I talk to them. Start a sentence with one, and the other responds. Continue with the other, and it's the first who goes on, but to the question before. Frédéric's puns, Nivèse's joy tinged with feigned naiveté, are a world of their own. Their apartment in the heart of old Nice is just like them: works of art adorn the walls, drawing boxes fill the room, stacks of paintings invade the space, books and documents are piled up in cramped bookcases. All in all, moments in the life of a very special school. Behind this jubilant fantasy, two key figures of the Ecole de Nice stand out. Frédéric Altmann is the school's living memory. He knows all the artists. Raysse, Mas, Cesar, Ben, Venet... He has photographed them all in their studios, during performances or exhibitions. He is also one of its key critics, with reference works on Côte d'Azur art such as Photographies d'une vie, 2000; André Verdet, mon carnet photo : de St-Paul au Mont Fuji, 2013 - Pierre Restany, hommage à un ami - Du Nouveau réalisme à l'Ecole de Nice : les archives racontent, 2017. He now has at his disposal a collection of 150,000 negatives, small windows opening onto Nice's past. Nivèse, the only female artist of the Ecole de Nice, is known for her sculptures and drawings. Of Croatian origin, she arrived in the South of France in 1973, and is a former assistant to César, who works with light: "What interests me is light and shadow, especially the projection of shadow. When you're walking and you see your extended shadow, I always have the impression that it's your soul, that extended shadow". This selection attempts to give a framework to these decadent lives, outlining the thinking of a colorful, baroque school, the abundance of a collector's life and stories of friendship. They are resolutely artists and historians of their time. Because that's what the Ecole de Nice is all about: the art of Life.
