JULES BRATEAU (1844-1923) Les Sciences et Les Arts Pewter dish and ewer. On the ewer's body, four female figures represent the seasons: summer under Wisdom, autumn under Science, spring under Poetry and winter under Vices and Ignorance. The handle represents a naked woman with one arm raised. The dish's central umbilicus shows Fame seated on a winged globe. It is divided into four parts, symbolizing the arts, and richly decorated with flowers, allegorical figures and attributes. On a ribbon are inscribed the names of famous painters, musicians, architects and sculptors of the time. Created between 1887 and 1889.
