STRIJ (STRY) Jacob van (Dordrecht 1756 - id.; 1815) Cows gra - Lot 35
STRIJ (STRY) Jacob van (Dordrecht 1756 - id.; 1815) Cows grazing with a couple of villagers on a riverbank. Oil on panel. Oak. Two horizontal boards. (Old, slightly yellowed varnish) H. 55 - L. 70 cm After training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp (1774 - 1776), Jacob van Strij returned to his native town and took up the tradition of grazing scenes, often set beside a river in a delicately golden light, originally initiated by Albert Cuyp (1620 - 1691), himself from Dordrecht. Our animal landscape can be compared with other works on panel by Jacob van Strij (Museum of Dordrecht, Herd on the riverbank, 68 x 89.5 cm; inv. 002 / 808).
