Pablo PICASSO. Autograph letter signed "Picasso", Céret [Aug - Lot 32
Pablo PICASSO. Autograph letter signed "Picasso", Céret [August 25, 1911], to Guillaume "Apolinaire", 37 rue Gros, Paris Passy; 1 page and a half in-4 (27 x 21.5 cm) headed Grand Café de Céret Michel Justafré, envelope with stamp After the theft of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre (August 21). [Following the theft, searches were carried out at Picasso and Apollinaire's homes, where they found Iberian statues previously stolen from the Louvre by Géry Piéret, Apollinaire's occasional secretary, who had inspired his character Baron d'Ormesan in L'Hérésiarque & Cie]. "Mon cher Guillaume Je t'ai dejà ecrit ier. I think it wouldn't be surprising if the Baron de Ormesan were the thief of the Gioconda, and when you tell me that you think it's possible that it's him, I'm not surprised. That if I wanted to illustrate (!) a book of yours I'd be so happy and I'd have to do something more at the librere. If I had money I'd buy the house I'm in and you'd come and see me here. I've already told you that I read your short story in Le Matin [L'Œil bleu, in Le Matin, July 31st] and how beautiful I found it. Write me very long letters and often if you can. Say hello to Marie Laurencin and kiss her magpies" Unpublished letter
