"Max Jacob's poetry is not in the Word, it is in the atmosphere that pushes his poems far back into infinity. The least of his inimitable poems comes from the depths of his soul, a soul clarified by years of meditation, a tender soul in which images combine with prodigious force and rapidity, seeming to be one with an almost always new thought.
