Alexander BRULLOFF (1798-1877) Landscape of Italy Watercolor - Lot 31
Alexander BRULLOFF (1798-1877) Landscape of Italy Watercolor on paper, signed lower left, small spots. Alexander BRULLOFF (1798-1877) Alexander Brulloff was born in St. Petersburg into a family of artists; his brother was the famous painter Karl Brulloff. A student of the Imperial Academy of Arts from 1810 to 1820, Alexander Brulloff was awarded a scholarship to study in Europe from 1822 to 1830, which took him to Italy, Germany and France. On his return to Russia in 1831, he was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts. Excellent miniaturist, he is the author, as his brother Karl of portraits, among the most prized of his time, as that of Nathalia Goncharova, the wife of Pushkin, or Princess Bakunin. As an architect, he designed the Mikhailovsky Theater in St. Petersburg. Our watercolor probably comes from an Album Amicorum belonging to the artist. The work is not dated, but most probably it was executed around 1823-24 during Alexander Brulloff's stay in Italy.
