COTE D IVOIRE, Senoufo. The large Senoufo statues whose feet - Lot 16
COTE D IVOIRE, Senoufo. The large Senoufo statues whose feet merge into a cylindrical base are referred to in specialized literature as "déblé. They have a major cultic function in the ceremonies controlled by the Poro initiation society: they were used both during the annual celebration of a new agrarian cycle and at the funerals of important members of the Poro or old women. The statue was then exhibited in a village square and during these collective festivities, it was taken in hand by each dancer who then simulated a dance with it, featuring swaying and sometimes some pounding of the ground.
