136 Antoine GADAN (1854-1934) The Harvest, Bonoise region, Algeria Oil on canvas. Signed lower left. Titled and dedicated on the back "A.Gadan, to his niece and nephew, affection, Charlotte and Henri Leroy". Numbered 253 on the stretcher. 56 x 100 cm (small lacks of material) Antoine Gadan arrived in Algiers at the age of 27 in 1881 and lived in a farm belonging to the Count of Sonis near Bône (Annaba). He painted rural subjects which earned him the nickname of "painter of grasses". His painting is full of poetry and sincerity. Gadan is a glory of Bône, present at the Universal Exhibition of 1900. He received the Vermeil medal from the hands of Rochegrosse. Many works of the painter are kept in the museums of Fine Arts of Algiers and Constantine.
