ZHAO Gang (Born 1961) Untitled, 2006 Oil on canvas Signed and dated '06' on the reverse. 130 x 155 cm Provenance: - Broken narrative exhibition at Galerie Bleich-Rossi in Vienna, Austria, 9 June - 16 September 2006. - Private collection Bibliography: This painting was the cover of the exhibition catalogue Broken narrative at the Bleich-Rossi Gallery in Vienna, 2006 We thank Mrs. Clara Yu for confirming the authenticity of the work. ZHAO Gang, born in Beijing in 1961, is the youngest member of the 'Des étoiles' group, the first avant-garde artistic movement to claim artistic freedom in China. In 1983, Zhao Gang left Beijing to study in Maastricht in the Netherlands and then in New York. His works were present in the exhibition Les Etoiles, 10 ans : 1989 at the Musée Cernuschien. When he returned to China in 2006, twenty-four years later, Zhao Gang developed a provocative style while questioning the history and representation of modern Chinese identity in the face of Western influences. Although the artist is both Chinese and American, he is considered (and considers himself) an outsider in two cultures; revolutionary historical figures are his recurring subject. In this painting he pays tribute to the famous Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) and his tragic fate.
