176 DIPLOMATIC CORRESPONDENCE FROM FRANCE TO RUSSIA. S.l., 1 - Lot 176
176 DIPLOMATIC CORRESPONDENCE FROM FRANCE TO RUSSIA. S.l., 1804-1808. 270 copies of letters on bifeuillets or notebooks pinned in-folio, accompanied for each letter by a summary statement; brown ink, corner note in purple ink on most of the copies we note on several copies the mention: "Deciphering of the dispatch n°... of the General .... Certified Campy"; "Correspondence from Russia"; marginal notes also in lead pencil, taking again those of the pinned analyses; [1804] 88 letters; [1805] 7 letters; [1806] 55 letters; [1807] 56 letters; [1808] 64 letters; the whole preserved in four cardboard portfolios of the time. Precious sets of diplomatic correspondence between France and Russia during the Empire. Each copy of a letter has been the subject of a brief diplomatic analysis, copied and pinned on the letter concerned. These are probably letters copied, commented and edited for publication (note the interventions of the editor who numbered the letters, assigned them to a particular volume and sometimes commented in purple ink). This correspondence begins on January 4, 1804 (13 Nivôse, year XII) with a letter from St. Petersburg from General Hédouville to Mr. Talleyrand (Gabriel-Marie-Théodore Hédouville (1755-1825) had been appointed Minister Plenipotentiary in Russia from 1801 to 1804). The last letter dates from Saint Petersburg on 22/30 March 1808 from Mr de Romanhoff to Mr de Caulaincourt. It is a series of copies of letters exchanged between the representatives of France in Russia and the French administration, thus providing a first-rate source for the history of Franco-Russian relations. 1804 and the first months of 1805 were marked by rising tensions between Napoleon's new imperial regime and Tsar Alexander, General Hédouville, then plenipotentiary in St Petersburg; the latter reported to Talleyrand on his talks with various Russian diplomats Novosilsof, Kotschouberg, Czatoriski, Tolstoy, making several mentions of Tatitscheff, Kourakine, Markow, D'Oub
