143 ORTELIUS, A. Russiae, Moscoviae and Tartariae Descriptio - Lot 143
143 ORTELIUS, A. Russiae, Moscoviae and Tartariae Descriptio. Antwerp, 1570. Col. 355 x 440 mm. Cut along the framing net on all four sides, these have been re-embossed. With Latin text on the reverse. Published in a 1570 edition with Latin text. Van den Broecke estimates that only 225 copies were printed. Engraved by Frans Hogenberg from an original drawing of 1562 by Anthony Jenkinson of the English Muscovy Company. The map covers the region from the Gulf of Finland, Lithuania and the Black Sea to the Sur River, Tashkent, the regions of Kossack, Colmack, etc. The many thumbnails are based on Marco Polo's exploration reports. At the top left is a depiction of the Russian Emperor and ruler of Moscow and more than a dozen native and mythical scenes, inhabitants in regional costumes and animals are depicted. v.d.Broecke, Ortelius 162.2
