JonOne (Born 1963) - Lot 197
JonOne (Born 1963) Winter Storm, 2013 Acrylic on canvas. 204 x 305 cm A certificate from Bel-Air Gallery will be given to the buyer Provenance: - Bel-air Gallery - Private collection from Monaco Originally from New York, JonOne met graffiti very early on. At the age of 17, the streets of Harlem are covered with his tags and his style unfolds towards a creative explosion. The artist captures the energy of the city where everything is intertwined: the long subway corridors, the crowds snaking laconically on the tarmac, the myriads of beams of lights and artificial lighting. The New York of the 80s is reputedly dangerous, some neighborhoods are insalubrious, but in this decorum, the American artistic genius of the end of the century flourishes. This was the era of Keith Haring and Peter Hujar, of the B-52's, of rock, of the beginnings of Hip-Hop and Rap. JonOne was part of this creative emulation, founding the group 156 All Starz in 1984, while rubbing shoulders with Basquiat and Wahrol at Studio 54. In his compositions, he mixes Abstraction, electric colors and mastery of the line, and lays the foundations of his art. The streaky patterns of his first compositions recall the jerky lights that the eye catches on board a subway train. Invited by Bando at the end of the 80s, he chose to move to Paris, while he gradually moved from walls and cars to canvases and galleries; while keeping this eminently recognizable gestural touch, he describes himself as an abstract expressionist graffiti artist. In 1990, the graffiti artist meets Master Pierre Cornette de Saint-Cyr who allows him to settle at the Hôpital Ephémère, a squat established in the Hôpital Bretonneau, from 1991 to 1996. There he met Sharp, Ash, JayOne, Skki and A-One who introduced him to the Parisian art world. It is this period in the heart of this singular place that will open the doors of collectors and gallery owners. This painting from the 2010s catalyzes the entire creative process: mastery of color and line, deployment and repetition of the motif and sign and words, softened by the soft blue and pearl gray that contrast with touches of powerful pink.
