Africa. The Lega live in the present-day Democratic Republic - Lot 139
Africa. The Lega live in the present-day Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) in the province of Kivu. They occupy a geographical area larger than Belgium in the form of small isolated communities in a difficult environment. The Legas classify their "masks" in the category of Bwami initiation objects. The Bwami is a kind of brotherhood that unites the Legas by cutting across clans and territories. Most Lega masks are sculptures of human faces, which are only rarely applied to the face. H. 28cm. (Africa, African art, Civilization and ethnic groups).
